NOT DONE YET.

The Philadelphia Flyers had no intention of going quietly into the offseason — especially not when faced with being swept by their in-state rivals.

Instead, the Flyers avoided a sweep and pushed the Eastern Conference Finals to a fifth game with a 4-2 win in Game 4 on Thursday night. First-period goals by Joffrey Lupul, Daniel Briere and Jeff Carter gave Philadelphia a lead, and Martin Biron played his best game of the... [Read More]

ABOUT WELL DONE.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -Quick strikes by Ryan Whitney and Marian Hossa raised the Pittsburgh Penguins to heights not reached since Mario Lemieux and Jaromir Jagr donned the black and gold.

Whitney and Hossa scored less than 3 minutes apart in the first period, and the Penguins held the Philadelphia Flyers to 18 shots Tuesday night in a 4-1 victory that gave Pittsburgh a 3-0 lead in the Eastern Conference finals.

Coach Laviolette to return to Hurricanes (AP)
The Carolina Hurricanes know their coach will be back next season. They're still waiting to find out whether two of their aging defensemen will join him. General manager Jim Rutherford said Friday that the team would retain coach Peter Laviolette, who in 2006 led the Hurricanes to their only Stanley Cup.
Wings ready to eliminate Stars in Game 5 (AP)
The Detroit Red Wings sound as if the Western Conference finals have lasted long enough. They're ready to eliminate the Dallas Stars on Saturday in Game 5 and earn a spot in the Stanley Cup finals for the first time since winning a title in 2002. "We want to finish them off as soon as we can," Detroit forward Tomas Holmstrom said Friday.
Penguins hope day off gets them on track (AP)

Philadelphia Flyers head coach John Stevens speaks to the media after the Flyers defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-2 in Game 4 of the NHL Eastern Conference hockey finals in Philadelphia, Thursday, May 15, 2008.

Evgeni Malkin could have talked with friends, enjoyed a dinner out, played video games or watched television. Whatever he did Friday, it wasn't at the hockey rink. While the Flyers practiced at their suburban Philadelphia rink for Game 5 of the Eastern Conference finals, Malkin, Sidney Crosby and the rest of the Pittsburgh Penguins enjoyed a day off.

Flyers D Timonen could return for Game 5 (AP)
Kimmo Timonen's return from injury suddenly seems much closer than that of Philadelphia Flyers defense partner Braydon Coburn. The All-Star was all but ruled out for the season a week ago, on the eve of the Eastern Conference finals, when it was revealed he had a blood clot in his left ankle. But after a visit to his doctor Thursday, just hours before the Flyers extended their season with a 4-2...
Panthers GM Martin to stay through '12 (AP)
Jacques Martin has reached an agreement to remain with the Florida Panthers as general manager through the 2011-12 season, the team said Friday. Martin was stripped of his duties as head coach last month but said he would stay on as general manager. He said then the two jobs were too much for one person.
