| Team Hive @ Binghamton Rangers - 4/2/2007 Can someone hook me up with a sub-forum for the game reports? Matless' OT Goal Sparks HIVE To 4-3 Opening Night Win
BINGHAMTON, New York. (AP) -- This is the most anticipated season in Team HIVE's brief history, and they showed a new spirit along with several acquisitions in their opener.
Wes Matless scored 3:02 into overtime, and Team Hive overcame three unanswered goals by the Rangers for a 4-3 victory over their opponent on Monday night.
"It just seemed like that puck was going to go in, no matter what," said Hive goalie Ryan Sassaman, who made 26 saves. "It's incredible. Last year, nothing really seemed to go our way. If it's a sign, this year is going to be a good year."
Mike Bowers, Jordan Stangle each had goals for their squad, who are now 2-0-0 all-time in season openers. Prior to the game, there was uncertainty about the Hive's offense after some key departures in the offseason. After the acquisition of some new threats, however, there's a stronger sense of confidence in the dressing room from a team that finished just below .500 in last year's inaugural season.
"We had trouble finishing games off last year, so hopefully this is the start of beginning to win the close ones," said Andrew Geleff, who was set up by a pretty drop pass from Cody McCullough in the second period. The chance was snubbed however, by Ranger goaltender Chris James.
The Rangers -- who lost at their first home opener ever on Monday night believe that this is the start of a successful season as well. "We had a rough preseason, but we remain strong, and we're going to surprise alot of people." said James.
Team Hive's Mike Bowers tied the game at 18:09 of the third period on a long wrist shot from behind the right circle, using Rangers defense as a screen.
Though Binghamton missed on many more prime scoring opportunities, much of that was due to the sharp Sassaman, who helped stave off a 5-on-3 late in the middle frame.
"I don't think it's all negative," Rangers coach Adam Bryant said. "We played pretty well tonight. We had a couple letups here and there, but this is a good team. We just need to focus and play a 60-minute game, and I think we'll be fine."
Game notes
Ryan Sassaman has no clear-cut backup behind him this season, so an injury could put the team in deep trouble..Eric Watt led his squad with 9 shots, all were stopped though..Drew Evans assisted on the game winning goal in his captain's debut.. Gendeloff also punished the Rangers with his physical play all night long, he also assisted on the GWG..The Hive's next contest is the home opener Friday as they take on the New Haven Blast ..
