Oh, and I'd like to be the first in this thread to express my severe distaste for Paul Holmgren.

At least we have a player that can fight a guy the likes of Orr and NOT get his ass kicked. That means Cote is as good as done, and Asham will most likely not be re-signed.
I would have still much rather seen Asham get re-signed to a 1 million year deal, for 2-3 years, as he can actually play 10+ minutes and score 25-30 points.

I said this a couple times yesterday. The Shelley signing isn't all that bad. If it's for something under $750k or so. But at the $1.1 million per mark, this is HORRIBLE.
The rest of the moves? Pretty good job.

Cripes. I go to New York for a weekend and Paul Holmgren loses his mind?
- Coburn at $3.2M per year is going to look much worse than Randy Jones at $2.75M, mark my words. The whole point of restricted free agency is to give the team some leverage when dealing with 2nd contracts, yet Paul Holmgren treats them like unrestricted free agents and just lets guys cash in on their most recent successes. Coburn had a few solid games in the playoffs, but was wildly inconsistent and almost completely ineffective in the regular season. What has he done to merit over $3M per year?
- Meszaros isn't bad, but for $250K more per year, he could have had a younger Volchenkov and kept the 2nd rounder.
- Sean O'Donnell is a solid #6 veteran to eat up minutes and mentor a younger guy like Bartulis, or maybe even to shore up Coburn's deficiencies and let him wander into the offensive zone a bit more without worrying about the defensive side of it. Either way, at $1.3M for one year it looks like a pretty solid signing.
- Jody Shelley... $1.1M per year. Two phrases that should not be found in the same statement. What on earth would possess Holmgren to drop that kind of money on a guy that will rarely find his way onto the ice? I could justify spending that money to re-up Asham, but under no circumstance should Jody freakin' Shelley ever make in excess of the League minimum. I'm thinking that Holmgren was in on Boogaard (they have been after him for a while), got outbid by the Rangers, panicked and then sent the same offer to Jody Shelley.
- Simon Gagne... Apparently has agreed to waive his No-Trade Clause. If Holmgren can recover the 2nd round pick he lost in getting Meszaros and frees up space to sign a reputable goaltender, then it's a win for the franchise. As much as I respect Gagne's talent and all that he's done for the Flyers franchise, there are several difficult decisions to be made in order to fall in line with a successful salary structure. Gagne's hit the big 3-0, is due for a new contract after this season and has struggled with injuries in recent years. If indeed a trade for Gagne materializes, I would wish him nothing but success in the Kings org-- er... wherever he ends up.
