The Flyers home-ice unbeaten streak has come to an end. A harsh 2-0 defeat by the New Jersey Devils ended the streak on Saturday night. Martin Brodeur saved the made all the stops in his 71st career NHL shutout (leads the NHL). The Devils iced the puck numerous times in this game which really made it hard for our boys to get the scoring chances, but the chances that were open, were quickly closed by Martin Brodeur.
Penalties: When the Flyers gained a powerplay with about 3:00 remaining in the game, things were looking up. The Flyers had the man advantage, and had the momentum on their side. That quickly changed, however. Keith Primeau was called just seconds later for an interference penalty that made it 4 on 4. The Devils man stepped out of the penalty box, and they scored the final goal on Primeau's penalty. Again, the sign of a bad captain in my opinion. You don't do those kinds of stupid things with the game on the line. If you saw the replay, it was an unarguable call, he interfered. The team's captain should be smart, and wouldn't do things like that Primeau did this evening.
Icing: It seemed that the Devils iced the puck alot from the beginning of the game. That made it tough for the Flyers to get many scoring chances, every time the Devils D-man got the puck, they iced it. If it was part of the gameplan, it was smart yet annoying.
Overall: The Flyers still do have a 4 point lead on the Devs, but two wins could have taken this team a long way, as Coach Hitch said earlier this week. The Flyers just didn't get it done.
Home Ice: "The Home Ice Advantage" campaign worked very well for the Flyers early this season, as they kept the home streak going throughout the first 3 months of the NHL regular season. It was a good ride, let's start a new one.
