Post Game Hive: 11/10/05 The Flyers should be known as the comeback kids from now forward. Down 2-0 to Atlantic division foes New York Islanders, they came all the way back, scoring three unanswered goals to win the game 3-2. Antero Niitymaki made 38 saves, and Patrick Sharp netted two goals to help the Flyers to their 8th straight victory at the Wachovia Center.
Niitymaki was spectacular in goal, as mentioned previously, making 38 saves, the majority of them were indeed, spectacular. He held the fort as the Islanders attempted to put Philadelphia down once and for all.
The dynamic duo of Simon Gagne and Peter Forsberg was shut down by the Isles tonight. However, the younger players stepped up for the orange and black, including Patrick Sharp, who scored two of those three unanswered goals against the always-tough Rick Dipietro.
I noticed that the Flyers were able to keep the Islanders after taking the 3-2 lead. Especially under the crucial 5-minute mark, the Islanders kept the Flyers on their toes, but Philadelphia was able to hold off some serious charges from ailing New York.
This game helps prove the depth that the Flyers have this season, more than any other in recent memory. The players that helped the Phantoms win the Calder Cup in 2005, are looking to help the big club win the Stanley Cup in 2006, and right now they're doing just that. With the schedule getting tough with an 11-game road trip to look forward to in mid-December, the Flyers need to gain all the points they can right now, as mentioned by Peter Forsberg in a recent interview.
Philadelphia will take on the Florida Panthers on Saturday night to end this recent lengthy homestand.
