Philadelphia's Mike Rathje opened up the scoring at 9:16 with a goal, Jon Sim helped screen New York's Garth Snow on the play. The Islanders responded at 10:52 of the opening period with a powerplay goal by Wyatt Smith, who knocked in a rebound from Joel Bouchard.
Mike Richards dropped the gloves with Joel Bouchard early in the second period , which is recorded as the first fight of the preseason. Richards was slapped with an instigation penalty, but New York did not score on the following powerplay.
Philadelphia's winning goal was scored at 5:57 of the third period by Branko Radivojevic, who took advantage of Michal Handzus's rebound. News & Notes
- Antero Nittymaki was shaken up when he collided with New York's Jason Blake in the third period. Antero staye in, and Blake recieved an interference penalty.
- Michal Handzus, Eric Chouinard, Wade Skolney, Brian Savage, Ben Eager and Jamie Storr all dressed for tonight's game after being scratched for the game against Atlanta earlier this week.
- Antero Niittymaki stopped 23 of 24 shots for the Flyers tonight.
- Simon Gagne wore the "C" tonight, Keith Primeau was a healthy scratch. My Two Cents
Well, our Flyers are 2-0 in the preseason with tonight's win against the Islanders. I warn you, though, don't get all fuzzy inside.. it's just the preseason.
With that said, let's focus on the positives of tonight's game. Antero Niitymaki played the game, stopping all but one shot, quite an impressive but nothing unexpected from this guy, he led the Phantoms to the AHL Calder Cup, I expected nothing less from him.
The Flyers, though, committed three consecutive penalties early in the first period, they killed them off. However, in order to be in contention for a championship in any sport at any level, a team must be disciplined. Hopefully, this was just a rough start to the game, and the trend stops before the regular season, we won't get very far with penalty numbers like that, even if we kill the majority of them off.
We're getting goals from different guys on the team. Tonight it was Rathje and Radivojevic's turn to step up. Hopefully, this trend will continue throughout the season.
I posted the facts above (stats, etc.) from the Flyers' official game recap, so if my report looks alot like that, I didn't see or listen to the game. Once the games are televised, I'll be able to come up with my own material without relying on recaps.
The Flyers (2-0), are next in action against the Washington Capitals on Saturday at home. Game time 7:00pm.
