Hey everybody, it feels great to be talking hockey again dosen't it? It's been so long since we've seen our boys in orange and black take the ice, it's really starting to feel like hockey season.
The Flyers took the ice in London's John Labatt Centre tonight against the Atlanta Thrashers. It was the preseason opener for both clubs. Tonight's tuneup match was also a great opportunity for the NHL to show the fans some of the new rule changes in effect this season, including the shootout, which was conducted following the conclusion of the third period.
Scoring: Simon Gagne (3),
Jon Sim (2),
Kim Johnsson,
Turner Stevenson,
and Mike Knuble all tallied goals for the Flyers.
As mentioned previously, a shootout followed the end of the third period in tonight's game.
Mike Richards scored the lone goal in the extra frame, as Philly goaltender Antero Niittymaki stopped all four shots he faced.
News & Notes: - Philadelphia went 3-9 on the powerplay tonight.
- Sami Kapanen, Derian Hatcher, and Peter Forsberg did not play in tonight's game.
Next Game: The Flyers continue their preseason schedule on Wednesday, September 21, when they face the New York Islanders at the Sovereign Bank Arena in Trenton, NJ.
Overall: Tonight's performance sounds promising. Although, one preseason game cannot tell what the future holds for the Flyers. I was impressed with Simon Gagne's hat trick, and the tallies from Stevenson, and Knuble, they're going to be key additions to our team this season.
Hope everyone's ready for another season of Flyers hockey and Post Game HIVE. I'm going to be trying some new things this year, referring to the layout of the report, so feel free to add any suggestions.
