I'm warming up to the Pitkanen/Oilers deal, so I voted I liked them all.

By far the lousiest move was trading Pitkanen away, but the Briere signing was far and away the best one.

I voted for all of them. Each move helped us in a need area, so I think they were all acceptable.

All helped, but I just think the Briere signing was the one we most needed. Solid, proven, speedy center who will get our offense going. No offense to the other moves; I love them too.

I voted for the Briere signing only beacuse I thought dumping Pitakanen was a dumb move.

How exactly did the Pitkanen trade help strenthen a weak area? We gained another older, less-than-mobile defenseman and an overhyped goalscorer that doesn't score goals. Meanwhile, we gave up likely future Norris candidate Pitkanen, who was the only defenseman we had that showed any kind of offensive initiative. Yes he made some bad decisions with the puck, but come on, the kid was 23 years old and thrust into the role of #1 d-man on the League's worst defensive team in one of the toughest hockey cities to play in. I think Pitkanen deserved a tad more time and a LOT more patience. Trading that kind of young talent for the kind of return we got is laughable in the new NHL, not to mention we also gave up a quality draft pick. The Flyers organization took an epic step backwards with that move and who knows how long it will take to unearth another blueline talent like Pitkanen?

I voted Briere because it's what we needed most and it was overall a smart move. I like Timo and Hartnell, I just think Hartnell was overpaid, but still, I like them both. The Pitkanen move will have to grow on me. I'm sure Smith will add a strong vet. presence on the blue line, but Lupul really needs to show his true colors to make this trade look viable.

You are right that Piki has a great upside, if he decides to get his head on straight. He could one day be a Norris trophy winner based off his potential, but how can you say he is going to reach that potential???

You come down on Lupul for having a bad year, but he too has a great upside that he didn't live up to last year. That is no different than Piki. They could both end up never living up to potential, or could have great careers. I just don't think this trade is as bad as you feel it is. Time will tell.

Wes has good points, as do you. The only way to know how this trade will work out is to just wait and see.
