Default Hatcher, Rathje, Therien???

Why did we sign these big lumbering d-men, when the new look NHL will be a lot faster? I dont get why we would go after these guys who are slow, and can make creative offensive plays, when guys like hamrlik, aucion, gonchar, leetch, etc were availible!

Who would you rather see making that lead pass to forsberg...hatcher, or leetch?

i dont get why people think these were good signings!

Hatcher's a pretty slow guy, true, but Rathje is a great all-around defenceman who can definately be offensive. Plus, the Flyers already have Johnsson, Pitkanen, Kapanen, and Desjardins, all very capable offensive defencemen.

Aside from that, Leetch, Aucoin, at least, came too expensive, and Gonchar isn't that great defensively.

Therien was just signed as filler.

some very good points , but even with the rule changes no one will knows how the game will move for sure.

We Do Have Some D-men that can move the puck up ice quickly when needed

IE: Desjardins, Johnsson, Seidenberg and Pitkanen

I Thick Hitch will probably have a veteran d-man pared with one of the youngers guys.

The Idea of Getting Hatcher and Rathje was to

A) Have D-Men that Can Clear The Crease When Need be.

B) Teach The Up and Comming D-man Seidenberg and Pitkanen

And Bundy ( Therien ) will probably be the 7th d-man and might only play if someone is hurt or not playing well .

Plus Remember we had to replace D-men that we lost to retirement or that were traded or picked up in free agnecy and while it may have been nice to add a leetch or Niedermayerthey would have cost to much and we needed more then just one d-man

but I'd take 3 d-men for the cost of one any day of the week.

but thats just my opinion

Right.. I forgot about Neidermayer. He's not close to worth the likely $7 he would've wanted from Philly, or I think was offered by Jersey.

Agreed. I don't think they would have fit in that well. I mean granted they both would have brought some offensive D to the team, but ugggghhhh what a thought. I think if anything Neidermayer would have fit in better cuz Philly has always hated Stevens, we would have respected Neider more ...

I remember Clarke said Roenick and Primeau told him to bring Therien back. Maybe THAT's the reason why JR was sent packing!

Don't know why everyone has to pick on Therien. Sure he makes an mental error once in a while and it may end up in our net, and his offensive talent is very minimal, but he's a good, solid stay-at home d-man who usually doesn't have a plus minus below +3,+5. Same thing with Toronto, always picking on Aki Berg who has one of the best plus-minus on the team, yet they are always unhappy. I don't want to be on Toronto's level.

Aki Berg is a waste of space. He's a plus one only because he rarely plays against top lines (Quinn's a good coach), and when he is on the ice with top players, he's stood up and exposed like the idiot he is.

Now replace Aki Berg with Chris Therien, "plus one" with "minus three", and consider that Therien is one of only five minuses and is the only fulltime defenceman with a minus on the second best team in the league, and we have ourselves a problem.

And tell me, who would you pick up to replace Therien?

What about Kapanen, why is he a -5? Were the second place team and hes played a hell of a lot less games than Therien.

Dennis Seidenberg, was in the minuses and has picked his game up somewhat, and is now somewhere like a +2 or so I believe.

I say get rid of Brashear before we blame Therien. What has Brashear done for us lately?

Call up more of our pretty damn good minor leaguers.

At least Kapanen has been producing offensively, and I think he's made up for any defensive problems with those two overtime winners. It's called a trade-off.

Seidenburg's still young and inexperienced. I'm not gonna judge him on his plus/minus just yet. And I would think you'd realize by now that nobody would pick up Brashear because of his awful play and his outrageous salary.

Seeing as how we're in pretty good shape even though we're missing Desjardins and Pitkaenen, it would suit me fine to see Therien go. I've a number of plays where he was just flat out burned and/or outskated. We've got plenty of muscle with Hatcher and Rathje... and Seidenberg can lay the body pretty well too. The young guys have more than proved themselves in the past few weeks.

haha, funny you mention Therien getting burned and me trying to back his ass up. I remember Ovechkin in the last game against the Caps ripping past Therien. That was quite brutal.

You have a point about Kapanen giving back with his 2 overtime winners but the fact that hes a -5 cannot be disputed.

I was not trying to convince you Therien is a great d-man because he isn't. But to blame him for everything is not the answer.

How he had 20 plus points in one season blows my mind.

Yeah, I know he's still minus five, but at least he's not getting burned like Therien every night.

And I don't think anyone's blaming Therien for everything, we're just saying he sucks. :toothless
