The Philadelphia Flyers have made their second trade in as many days, sending defenceman Jim Vandermeer to the Calgary Flames for a 2009 third round pick.

Vandermeer, 27, has three goals, 15 points and 71 penalty minutes in 54 games this season with the Chicago Blackhawks and Flyers.

He was originally signed as a free agent by Philadelphia in 2000, and spent parts of two seasons with the Flyers before being dealt to the Blackhawks in 2004.

The native of Caroline, Alta., makes $1.225 million this season, and will become an unrestricted free agent July 1.

To cover all their bases, the Flyers need to have another defenseman JUST IN CASE there is another injury which takes out a starting D-Man. I suppose that the Flyers are confident with Parent. OR - with Gagne out for the rest of the season do they bring up Gauthier? Not sure how the salary cap effects this situation.

Its a blessing to see him go, but the Flyers need a big move and they need it now. Especially with Gags out for the rest of the season. Trading for draft picks isn't gonna help us make the playoffs, and should we make the playoffs, it isn't gonna get us past the first round. We have plenty of young talent, what we don't have, is a veteran that gives that locker room and team, the identity and leadership we are starved for. Experience, experience, experience. They need a big veteran boost. If they don't make a big move, then we haft to believe that the organization is satisfied with the improvements we have already seen. Maybe, they just want us all to be patient, and realize that most championship teams aren't built over one off season. Maybe, especially after the joke we witnessed last year, thats not really asking us for much. GO FLYERS.
