Default Flyers CRUSH Penguins 8-2 - Fights, hats, more fights.

Got hats?

Andy's notes at the bottom.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Joffrey Lupul’s two quick goals got him on a fast track for the Flyers’ first hat trick at home in two years. R.J. Umberger made the fans’ wait much shorter for another one.

Lupul notched a hat trick and had six points, and Umberger added three goals and five points to snap Philadelphia’s five-game winless skid at home and lift the Flyers to an 8-2 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday night.

“That doesn’t happen anymore,” Lupul said.

Taking a few extra minutes to sweep off the hats from a pair of three-goal performances were about the only thing that slowed down the Flyers.

“The puck just bounced our way and we were there to finish,” Umberger said.

Lupul had the first six-point game for a Flyer since Eric Lindros on March 1, 1997, against Toronto. The Flyers also had two players with a hat trick in the same game for the first time since Tim Kerr and Dave Poulin each had three goals against the Islanders on Dec. 18, 1986.

The Flyers improved to 3-0 this season against their Atlantic Division rival, a needed turnaround after an 0-8 mark against the Penguins last year. The Flyers also won their first home game since they improved to 6-0 at the Wachovia Center with a win over the Islanders on Nov. 12.

“We definitely have a chip on our shoulder and it’s not just the guys that were here last year,” Umberger said. “I think the guys that have come in know exactly what happened and they don’t want to be a part of that.”

Sidney Crosby assisted on both goals for the Penguins, who ended a four-game winning streak. Ryan Whitney and Petr Sykora scored goals in the first period that tied the score at 2.

A flurry of fights seemed to spark the Flyers and send the Penguins into a postgame snit. Flyers coach John Stevens complained about Pittsburgh’s rough play late in the third when the game was already out of reach, and there was a combined total of 156 penalty minutes.

“I think we’re back to playing Flyers hockey and challenging them,” Umberger said.

Penguins coach Michael Therrien accused the Flyers of playing with a lack of respect.

“Are we talking about the same team that got five guys suspended this year? Is that the same team?” he said.

There was a fight only 20 seconds in the game and some hard hits and scuffles throughout that the crowd absolutely loved. Pittsburgh’s Colby Amstrong and Philadelphia’s Scott Hartnell each received game misconducts in the third for a lengthy brawl.

The Flyers faithful rode Crosby hard, booing the Penguins captain every time he touched the puck.

“I think we had to stick up for each other at one point,” Crosby said. “They have a lot of guys who play physical and probably take it beyond physical sometimes but beyond that I think it’s just sticking up for one another.”

The Flyers scored five goals against goalie Dany Sabourin before he was yanked for Ty Conklin to start the third.

Lupul scored the first two goals, one in the third and assisted on all three of Philadelphia’s goals in the second period. Lupul, who started the game with six goals and 17 points, had his best game as a Flyer and arguably his finest since he scored four goals for Anaheim in Game 3 of the Western Conference semifinals against Colorado in 2006.

Lupul started the scoring only 1:11 into the game when he took a perfect pass from Umberger for a one-timer past Sabourin. He scored goal No. 2 only 2 1/2 minutes later when he fired a slap shot from the slot that sent an already fired-up crowd into a frenzy.

Lupul capped the Flyers second hat trick of the season — first at home — when he knocked in a rebound in front of the crease that made it 6-2 and the hats were hurled onto the ice.

“It’s special, but when it’s 6-2, they don’t mean a lot,” Lupul said. “The two in the first period felt better than the one in the third period.”

Crosby tried to rally his team in the first when he set up two Penguins goals that tied the game at 2.

Umberger scored his fifth and sixth goals of the season early in the second for a 4-2 lead and the Flyers took control from there. He added his third goal with 2:12 left in the game.

Mike Knuble added his ninth goal late in the third for a 5-2 lead. Braydon Coburn’s second goal of the year in the third made it 7-2 for the Flyers, who had the most goals scored against Pittsburgh this year.

Notes

Flyers D Derian Hatcher sat out with a sore right knee. Hatcher had surgery on the knee in the fall to drain fluid build up. The fluid returned and the Flyers listed Hatcher as day to day. … Flyers C Mike Richards earned his 100th career point on Umberger’s first goal. … The Flyers said they will induct former G Ron Hextall into their Hall of Fame in February.

Andy's Notes:

What an incredible game to be at. Just, wow. The crowd was into this game tonight, and I ultimately believe that the crowd took control of this game. Definitely got into the Penguins heads, caused some frustration, and made them do some things they'll probably regret in the long run.

Where was RJ Umberger in the 3 star selection?
  1. Lupol
  2. Richards
  3. Crosby

Someone please tell me why Crosby is on that list? With his -3, costly performance, I probably could've made a better third star as a fan. RJ Umberger, when I last checked, had a hat trick, was a +4 with 5 points, and ultimately helped Joffrey set-up nearly all of his goals. That's first star material right there. Sure, Lupol had a 6 point outing, but come on. RJ was the playmaker tonight.

Speaking of Crosby, someone please fuck him up. I'm tired of his antics. I'm tired of announcers all across the league sucking his wang, and I'm tired of him getting away with the stupid shit he does. That trip on Biron was 100% unavoidable. Had Biron gotten hurt, I would've walked to the locker room myself and ended Crosby's career.

That's really all I care to comment on now.
Overall - Excellence by the boys in orange and black tonight. Definitely glad I made the trip out to the center for this one. I'm enlightened by the fact that I have 2 more sets of tickets for the Penguins this year, too.

Two things. First... the newly formed Richards-Umberger-Lupul line. Where have you been all my life... or more specifically all year? Holy crap 14 points including 2 hatties? Shwaa?

That was my happy time. Now I have to talk about this whole 3 stars situation... you all know what I mean. I really try not to over use this word, but it applies here. TRAVESTY. How do you take the third star from a guy's first career hat trick like that? Is Crosby that much of a golden boy? He took a silly little cheap shot at our goalie for god's sake! He went -1! According to the scoresheet the 3 stars were picked by Rob Parent of the Del Co. Daily Times. I don't know the guy, but I think he should be ashamed.

That's it. Sorry to find the one way to get down on such a great game. Totally jealous of any of you that saw it in person.

IF I touched on this game right now, I'd do nothing more than echo exactly what you just wrote, If I could thank your post twice I would.

Amazing game. Any romping like that is gold, but against the sissy Penguins, it's so much sweeter. Talk about having your asses handed to you.

WAH much you douchebag? Don't you think you should be in the locker room correcting your team's putrid play instead of sobbing like a woman? I swear halfway through that 3rd period there was a camera shot of him in close, and it looked like he was having diarrhea in his pants.

Whoever started the "WE WANT CROSBY!" chants over and over is my new hero. And the "Do do doooo doooo - CROSBY SUCKS!!". Just priceless.

Best thing yet, this was televised on national TV. Keep the hate coming....I love it.

Finally, hey Sid, take a few of these hats and swallow them. Hopefully that will shut your whiney ass up.

That game had a little bit of everything in it. And don't forget Laraque taking out Biron as well. I've got to get me some tickets to a Pens game.

Yeah, that was pretty intelligent, wasn't it. Totally premeditated and deliberate attempt to take out a goalie.

That could have caused a serious knee injury to Biron. But I'm sure nothing will come out of it because it wasn't a "headshot" or Laraque wasn't wearing orange and black.

All because Crosbaby got sacred that Biron would've kicked his ass. I'd have loved to see that. And weren't the two of them Mic'd up? That would've been priceless to hear.

I'd have gotten up and started hacking away like Hextall. Just ask Watt, I slashed him quite a few times

Well, I just read Pittsburgh's brilliant journalism, and this was their conclusion:

Quote:
Crosby recorded two points, assisting on goals by Whitney and left wing Petr Sykora. He was named the game's No. 3 star -- presumably so a rabid Philadelphia crowd could chant obscenities at him one last time.
- Rob Rossi, TRIBUNE-REVIEW
I would so love to see the city of Pittsburgh Sodom and Gomorrah'd.

Hum.

For someone who's "a superstar", he sure gets shaky and nervous when we shout those obscenities at him.

Pussy.

ya, he can have his 34 pts in 19 games against us, but were gonna make that little shit work for his money, cudos to the canucks for working him as hard as we did the game before. If everyone would play him that hard , he'd probably quit and go to sweden to play or something.
great effort tonite, and laroque taking out biron should be dealt with by the league as far as I'm concerned, before we have to do something to him that will give us another suspension.

That game was the shit.

yeah I was at the game last night, best part was the corsby chants! anything that had a beat in the arena we added crosby sucks. absolutley amazing. It also helps that were completley beating the shit out of the penguins too.

i was listening to wip last night driving home and your right the guy from the del co times picked crosby as the third star early, and then they were talking about something and it was too late? What an idiot.

This is True...hahaha

now i didnt see the game...cause of versus, and the online feed was gay..from this girl i worked with, se said there was a missed charging penalty? as he left his feet? NOW with that being said, he should get suspenderzzz for lyfe. if he doesnt wtf. and she mentioned the intentional slide into biron, now shouldnt that warrant a suspention to? if not crosby is sucking off bettman more than ever this year. i guess alkl the lipstick bettman buys him too.

like andy sataed how the fuck is he the third star? that wasnt the Top 3 Pussy's of the game.
