Default Flyers Sign Upshall to New Two-Year Contract

The Philadelphia Flyers announced that they have signed 6?0?, 197-pound forward Scottie Upshall to a new two-year contract, according to General Manager Paul Holmgren.

?We were very pleased with Scottie?s performance after we acquired him midway through last season and we?re glad to have him locked up in our organization for the next couple of seasons,? said Holmgren in making the announcement. ?It was a priority for us to get this deal done as soon as possible so we can continue to move forward with our offseason plans.?

Upshall, 23, recorded eight goals and eight assists for 16 points and 26 penalty minutes in 32 regular season games for the Flyers and Nashville Predators this past season. He posted 13 points (6G,7A) and eight penalty minutes in 18 games for the Flyers. Upshall was acquired by the Flyers, along with defenseman Ryan Parent and a first round pick and third round pick in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft from Nashville in exchange for Peter Forsberg on February 15, 2007. He registered three points (2G,1A) and 18 penalty minutes in 14 games for the Predators.

In 95 career regular season games over parts of four NHL seasons (2002-03 through 2006-07), Upshall has recorded 17 goals and 25 assists for 42 points and 60 penalty minutes. He was drafted by the Predators in the first round (sixth overall) of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.

Upshall had the following to say about the contract:

Q - What are your thoughts on signing a two-year contract?

Scottie Upshall: ?To be honest, I?m extremely happy. It?s an exciting time for myself and family, and now I?m just looking forward to having a great summer and coming to Philly in September ready for training camp and ready to have a good start to the season.?

Q - What are your thoughts on Philadelphia and the organization in the short time that you have been here?

Upshall: ?The organization itself is spectacular. They really treat you great, and they treat the players with a lot of respect. Despite the season we had, it was great for me to see how involved the fans and the city are with the team. For me, everyone was extremely welcoming and I?m happy to be here. Now, I?m just looking forward to staying and enjoying some winning hockey.?

Q - Was it a priority for you to get this out of the way early in the offseason?

Upshall: ?Well, I spoke with my agent on Monday, who spoke with Paul [Holmgren], and both sides wanted to get something done. To me, that was nice to know and now we can put that aside. For me, just having the opportunity here that I do is the most important thing. The contract itself is just a bonus. I just want to prove that I can help the Flyers and that together we can be a championship team.?

Good move, nice to see he will stick around, unless of course they trade him, which I hope they don.t

Great news, just saw this today on ESPN. He's a BIG part of our future and I was really hoping we'd lock him up.

Time to go buy my jersey.
