| Not enough of a return IMO.
Upshall is an agitator...makes me wonder if the Eager to Buffalo trade I read about will be going through. | | | | Senior Member

| we could've easily gained a lot more than that... gotta wonder now. I think the 1st rounder and Parent are the best parts of this deal. He's a 19 year old defensive prospect. | | | | The cake is a lie.

| This is ridiculous. Ridiculous. First round pick... for God's sake, it'll be something like the 29th pick in the draft! Third rounder is completely useless, and who the heck is Upshall?

| With the possibility of Foppa coming back here after this season's over, and considering the amount of time this trade took to compile, I think we did a hell of a job for once.
Upshall's pretty decent, Parent's up and coming.
You never know.
It's not a great deal, it's not a horrible deal.
Either way, I'm sad to see Peter go, but it needed to be done. | | | | do-nothing Hiver

| The "short" book on Ryan Parent:
Ryan Parent
Prospect Grade: 7.0 C
OB: Mar 17, 1987
Age: 19
Place of Birth: Prince Albert, Sask., Canada
HT: 6-2 WT: 183
Shoots: L
History
Parent has a nice history of success and leadership. He was captain of the Team Ontario that took home the gold medal at the under 17 tournament in 2003-04. He was captain of Team Canada that won the gold medal at the under 18 championships in August of 2004. He played sparingly as a rookie on the veteran laden Guelph team that won the OHL title in 2004. He was selected to play for Team OHL in the 2004 Canada-Russia Challenge series. He played in the 2005 CHL top Prospects game in Vancouver.
Talent Analysis
Parent will never be a big scoring defenseman, but he has all the tools to play a long time at the professional level. The fact that he has been chosen Captain on several occasions speaks volumes of his leadership potential. The book on him is that he is a good solid all around defenseman with no major flaws in his game. He plays in all situations for a rebuilding Guelph team and logs a lot of minutes for them.
Future
He should be a top 4 defenseman in the NHL who can play against the top lines of the opposing team and take a regular spot on the penalty kill.

| If the Flyers are committed to winning as many games as they can before the end of the season, this was NOT the way to do it. Forsberg is worth MUCH more than a mere ?CHANCE? that these guys will pan out. The facts are: With Forsberg in the lineup the Flyers win more frequently. And now that he?s gone, how often will they win?! If they got a player who is ready to play NOW, maybe they could have come in and helped them win now. Instead they have to wait until next season and ?see how it turns out?. WTF!?
I?m hoping and praying that the front office have something up their sleeves with these picks and no-name players. There are still a couple weeks before the deadline. | | | | King Bee Squared From: Reading, PA Join Date: Aug 2003 Posts: 5,532

They say they're focused on NOW and winning NOW, but face it.
This season's garbage. We'll play spoiler. That's it.
We can't rely on one player to win us games.
Our record is 0-13-3 without Forsberg.
And hell if I want this to turn into some kind of 76er's **** where we rely on Allen Iverson to carry our weight everywhere.
Lighten up guys. This year is different. This is not typical Philadelphia Flyers hockey we're seeing, and it's not going to be for quite some time. | | | | Thanks.

| IMO, the Flyers just raped Nashville. THREEE first rounders (this year's 2007, plus UPSHAW and PARENT) for a rental player. And I will GUARANTEE that Forsberg will be back with the Flyers this summer. Why? When have you ever seen an outgoing player present at the press conference announcing his trade? Second, why would Peter need to meet with Snider for 30 minutes today? Homer is the GM & all trades are through him. Third, did anyone hear Foppa gushing about Philly, notably Gags & Knuble? He even said that this team (Flyers) will turn things around quickly. And fourth, earlier this year he said he felt he owed the Flyers after everything they've done for him... Peter has a lot of pride & I truly believe he acted for the betterment of the Flyers here.
Also, lets not forget that if Peter doesn't want to be here next year he wouldn't resign this summer anyway... regardless of whether he was dealt at the deadline. This deal HAD to be done. Peter could retire after this year, or sign with someone else... which he would've done if he didn't want to be here anyway. At least the Flyers got a lot in return.
These guys are going to be good... Here's what we got
(RW) SCOTTIE UPSHAW. 6'0"/197lbs. 23yrs old. Acq NASH 2002 NHL Draft, 1st Round, 6th Overall. From hockeysfuture: ...Upshall is a solid skating winger who is blessed with great hands and a ton of grit. Plays well at both ends of the rink, but excels once he enters the offensive zone. Good passer, quick release on his snap/wrist shot. Works hard in the corners and cycles the puck well low in the offensive zone. Throws some huge hits, but isn't afraid to take them either to make the play. Agitating winger who can put up big numbers....This guy leaves nothing on the bench during a game, but one of his biggest assests is also the one area he needs to work on the most and that is, he needs to play with controlled emotion because when things aren't going well is prone to taking penalties born out of frustration and opposing teams try and use to their advantage by getting on him early in games...
(D) RYAN PARENT. 6'2"/195. 19yrs old. Acq. NASH 2005 NHL Draft, 1st Round, 18th Overall. From hockeysfuture: ...Parent will never be a big scoring defenseman, but he has all the tools to play a long time at the professional level. The fact that he has been chosen Captain on several occasions speaks volumes of his leadership potential. Parent sounds promising.
Giving up Foppa is difficult to grasp at the moment, but I expect him to return this summer.
Time will tell.

| The Flyers will have about $20M in cap space AFTER signing their free agents this summer. Not only will they be able to sign Forsberg, but quite possibly TWO more players in the realm of Kimmo Timonen, Karyia, Gomez, Briere, and Drury. Even if they don't sign Foppa, I wouldn't mind any of those 3 on the Flyers next year.
It also looks like Hatcher may be dealt to EDM, which frees up another $3.5M.
Look at what is in the system right now for the Flyers (all very highly touted prospects):
Scottie Upshall, Ryan Parent, RW-Claude Giroux - 3rd in scoring in the Q (Angelo Esposito has 30 less points than him, I believe), C-Steve Downie, RW-Andreas Nodl, Potulny, Picard, Jones, Carter, Richards, Umberger, Eager and Pitkanen. Add to that the Flyers first pick this year, (#1/2 overall), and the pick we just got from Nashville (late 1st round).
Suddenly the Flyers are a very deep organization that is in a prime position to be very dominant for many years with home grown talent.
I'm more optimistic about the Flyers future now than I have been in a very long time. They actually have a gameplan & aren't just trading off talent for unsucessful Cup runs. (See: Justin Williams, Ruslan Fedotenko, etc) | | | | | | |
