Flyers Acquire Kiel McLeod in Exchange for Eric Chouinard

Kiel McLeod
The Philadelphia Flyers announced that they have acquired 6?6?, 230-pound center Kiel McLeod (KIGHL muk-KLOWD) from the Phoenix Coyotes in exchange for right wing Eric Chouinard, according to Assistant General Manager Paul Holmgren. McLeod will report to the Flyers? American Hockey League affiliate, the Philadelphia Phantoms.

?Kiel is a big kid, he will be 23 (years old) at the end of December (December 30) and he?s about 6?6? and 230 pounds,? said Holmgren in making the announcement. ?We think that there is some potential that has yet to be tapped into. He is a player that our scouting staff has been enamored with because of his size. Every once in a while we see a glimpse of something there. He will be a little bit of a project prospect right now, but we feel because of his age and size that he is a player worth taking a chance on.?

McLeod, 22, has posted an assist and 33 penalty minutes in 28 games for the Coyotes? AHL affiliate, the San Antonio Rampage, this season.

A native of Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, McLeod recorded 13 goals and 12 assists for 25 points and 107 penalty minutes in 73 regular season games for the Utah Grizzlies last season. Over three seasons in the AHL with the Springfield Falcons (2003-04), Utah (2004-05) and San Antonio, McLeod has registered 20 goals and 24 assists for 44 points and 211 penalty minutes in 178 regular season games. He was signed as a free agent by Phoenix on June 9, 2003.

Prior to turning professional, McLeod played five seasons with the Kelowna Rockets of the Western Hockey League (1998-99 through 2002-03), recording 123 goals and 138 assists for 261 points and 467 penalty minutes in 288 regular season games. He was named to the WHL West Second All-Star Team following the 2002-03 season after posting 90 points (39G,51A) and 163 penalty minutes in 68 regular season games. He added 10 points (5G,5A) and four penalty minutes in eight playoff games as Kelowna won the 2003 WHL Championship and advanced to the Memorial Cup Finals.

He was originally drafted by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the second round, 53rd overall, of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft.

Chouinard, 25, was scoreless in one game with the Flyers this season. In 24 games for the Flyers? AHL affiliate, the Philadelphia Phantoms, he had recorded seven goals and seven assists for 14 points and four penalty minutes. The 6?3?, 207-pound right wing was signed as a free agent by the Flyers on August 22, 2005.

In parts of three seasons with the Flyers (2002-03, 2003-04 and 2005-06), Chouinard had registered 11 points (7G,4A) and 10 penalty minutes in 46 regular season games. He has recorded 11 goals and 11 assists for 22 points and 16 penalty minutes in 90 regular season games over four NHL seasons with the Montreal Canadiens (2000-01), Minnesota Wild (2003-04) and Flyers. He posted five goals and five assists for 10 points and 42 penalty minutes in 16 games for Salzburg EC of the Austrian League during the 2004-05 season.

I like the way Chouinard played, haven't heard much of this new kid, hope he's a good player, the Phantoms could use some more depth with all of the recent call-ups.
