Thumbs up Flyers Vs Phantoms Katrina Benefit

Source: Philly.com

The Flyers' exhibition season was not supposed to start until next weekend, but that was before Hurricane Katrina ravaged the Gulf Coast and turned a major U.S. city into a Third World-like disaster zone.

So the Flyers are adjusting their schedule and will play an intrasquad charity game Sunday at the Flyers Skate Zone in Voorhees, N.J.

All ticket proceeds will go to the flood victims.

"I spoke with some of the guys this Saturday, and we decided to hold a charity game for the people down South. God knows they need it," Flyers trainer Jim McCrossin said. "We're just going to shuffle the deck. We're not going to do Flyers and Phantoms, we'll mix them up, play a good game for a good cause and try and raise some money."

McCrossin said the game is set for 7 p.m. Sunday and tickets will be $10. McCrossin said coach Ken Hitchcock will arrange to have guest coaches from local radio stations.

After the game, the players will sign their sticks to be auctioned off. The players also will be available for photo opportunities with the fans.

"It's a great idea," forward Simon Gagne said. "Every day when you turn on the television, it's getting worse and worse, and if you can do something to help them, it will be great.

"We're just going to go on the ice and do what we like, and, hopefully, people will come and see us and at the end of the day, we'll have as much money as possible to help those people.

"It's pretty bad, what's going on. I was looking at it again last night and it's not going to be better any day soon," he said. "It's going to take a long, long time before their lives come back to the way they were before."

wish I had some extra money to go , but I'm sure this will be a sold out event considering the short number of seats there are at the skate zone
