Players vary between the various databases that are out. I'm guessing that had something to do with it. Stamkos didn't even go #1 Overall, I think Yann Sauve went #1 to Tampa Bay. Here's Pietrangelo's ratings: | | | | This Space for Rent Join Date: Sep 2003 Posts: 2,188

| Flyers wrap-up Training Camp and Exhibitions
The Philadelphia Flyers recently completed Training Camp and their pre-season games. Camp focused heavily on the younger players, with players like Briere, Gagne, Timonen, Lupul, Knuble sitting out. Briere, Gagne, Timonen, Kapanen, and Ville Leino were away for most of camp at the World Cup. The Flyers held a bit of an open camp, and several players showed up. The Flyers ended up offering two players contracts, both were then sent to Wheeling of the ECHL. Andreas Nodl, Andrei Popov, and Kevin Kelin were very impressive during camp. All will figure to have a big role for the Phantoms this year.
The Flyers played five exhibtion games, and ended with a 2-3 record. The Flyers used mainly players from the Phantoms, a few of the better tryout players, and the younger players from the Flyers roster (Coburn, Lebda, Upshall, Carter, Richards, Umberger.) Marty Biron and Antero Niittymaki saw about a game each of action. The rest of time was divided up between Phantoms goalies, and one of the tryout goalies.
The Flyers claimed F Jed Ortmeyer off waivers from Nashville. Flyers 2008-09 Roster | | | | This Space for Rent Join Date: Sep 2003 Posts: 2,188

| October Update 10/5
TB @ PHI 2:3 OT
The Flyers opened the 2008-09 season at home in Philadlephia with large expectations of this year's team. The Lightning, however, would look to spoil the party. Both team splayed a fairly conservative game, as neither knew what exactly to expect with the young season. The game would eventually go into overtime where Tampa's Ryan Craig got his second of the game, and the winner. Randy Jones scored the other Lightning goal. Joffrey Lupul and Simon Gagne scored for the Flyers. 10/7
PHI @ PIT 3:5
The Flyers and Penguins renewed their bitter rivalry in the season's second game, and the first of a home and home series. This one would have the Flyers visiting the Steel City. The Flyers were coming off of a heartbreaking OT loss in their home/season opener, and would look to get back on the winning track. While the Flyers managed to keep Crosby from scoring, they couldn't hold off the rest of the Penguins attack. Sergei Gonchar netted two goals for the Pens. Malone, Staal, and Sykora had the rest of the goals for the Pens. Bill Guerin added three assists for the Pens as well. Jeff Carter, Scottie Upshall, and Derian Hatcher scored for the Flyers. Mike Knuble has two assists. 10/7
PIT @ PHI 4:5
The Flyers and Penguins would pick up right where they left off, this time in Philadelphia. The Flyers would look to use home ice and pick up their first win on the season. As usual, the game was closely played and both teams were looking to send a message for the long season ahead. Pittsburgh's goals came from Jim Fahey, Malkin, Crosby, and Bill Guerin. Meanwhile, Kimmo Timonen, Gagne, Lupul, Carter, and Danny Briere (also had three assists) scored for the Flyers. Mike Richards also added two assists. 10/12
NJ @ PHI 5:6 OT
The Devils were next in line for the Flyers, as the looked to get the season's second win. The Flyers have seemed to struggle against the Devils in recent years, and they would look to turn things around. An unusually high scoring game followed, as at the end of regulation the score was tied at 5-5. Travis Zajac, Maddedn, Bergfors, Lapointe, and David Clarkson scored for the Devils. Simon Gagne (two goals,) Carter, Richards, and Ville Leino scored for the Flyers. In the OT period, Scott Hartnell found the back of the net to seal a win for the Flyers. 10/14
PHI @ TOR 3:4 OT
The Flyers and Leafs would meet in Toronto, as the Flyers looked to continue their winning ways. This was expected to be a close one, and neither team wanted to go away quietly. Mark Bell had a huge game for the Maple Leafs as he netted a hat-trick. Kimmo Timonen, Briere, and Richards scored for the Flyers. With the score tied late in the 3rd period, the Flyers had a PP chance to take the lead, however they were unable to convert, despite numerous chances. In overtime, a penalty to Mike Richards would prove costly, as Mats Sundin found the net for the game winner. 10/16
NYI @ PHI 2:4
After a tough loss in Toronto, the Flyers returned home to face off with the Isles. The Flyers played a good all-around game, keeping the Isles relatively in check. Trent Hunter and Bobby Holik scored for the Isles. Joffrey Lupul and Simon Gagne each scored twice for the Flyers. Gagne also had two assists, as did Denis Kulyash. 10/18
CBJ @ PHI 3:4
Ken Hitchcock and the BlueJackets made a rare visit to the Wachovia Center. The Flyers were able to keep Rick Nash from scoring thanks top a great checking effort by Ortmeyer/Leino/Kapanen. Duvie Wescott, W. Primeau, and Freddy Modin scored for the BlueJackets. Danny Briere had a hat-trick for the Flyers, and Jeff Carter had the fourth Flyers' goal. Simon Gagne had two assists. Simon Gagne left the game late in the 2nd period with a knee injury, he was listed as day-to-day. 10/21
PHI @ MTL 2:3 OT
A rematch of last year's Eastern Semis was up next for the Flyers, as they traveled to Montreal. The Flyers would be without Simon Gagne as he was still resting his injured knee, Ryan Potulny would take his spot in the line-up. Both teams played it tightly, not wanting to give the other team many opportunities. Tomas Plekanec and A. Kostitsyn scored for Montreal. Denis Kulyash and Ryan Potulny scored for the Flyers. In overtime, Montreal captain Saku Koivu would find the back of net as the Habs picked up a 3-2 win over the Flyers. Cristobal Huet made 41 saves in picking up the win. 10/25
CAR @ PHI 5:3
The Hurricanes blew into Philadelphia and controlled much of the game, as the Flyers continued to have fits with the Hurricanes attack. Former Flyers Justin Williams and Rod Brind'Amour each netted two goals against their former team, Sergei Fedorov had the other. The Flyers goals were scored by Joffrey Lupul, Knuble, and Umberger. Mike Richards had two assists. 10/28
PHI @ LA 8:4
When the Flyers and Kings met in Los Angeles, both teams apparently forgot to bring their defenses along with them. Rumor has it that the red goal lamps needed be replaced after the game. Villie Nieminen, Kopitar (2) and David Vyborny scored for the Kings. Pierre-Marc Bouchard added three assists. Brett Lebda, Gagne (2; also two assists,) Danny Briere (2,) Mike Richards, Ville Leino, and RJ Umberger (also two assists) scored for the Flyers. Kimmo Timonen had four assists. With his three points in the game, RJ Umberger surpassed the 100pt mark for his career. 10/30
PHI @ DAL 3:5
Philadelphia and Dallas would meet once again, this time on the ice. Both teams played played very equally as the game stayed close until the final seconds. Simon Gagne, Danny Birere, and Ville Leino scored for the Flyers. Jussi Jokinen (2,) Mike Modano (2,) and Steve Ott scored for Dallas. Modano's second goal came on an empty netter with five seconds left. Roster Moves
Flyers claim F Graham Mink off waivers from Calgary. Quote: |
GM's comment: "Graham will be a great addition to our checking line and PK units. He also should be able to provide some offensive output as well." | To CGY: F Sami Kapanen
To PHI: F David Desharnais Quote: |
GM's comment: "After we acquired Mink, we were left with an extra forward for our checking role. We were also looking to add a little help for the Phantoms. Calgary was looking for some veteran help on the wing, and they had the young players we had interest in. Obviously, it tough to let Sami go he was all heart and soul while he played here. We wish him all the best."
| To DAL: F Scottie Upshall, G Martin Biron
To PHI: F Antti Mietten, G Mike Smith, and a 2009 2nd Round Pick Quote: |
GM's comments: "This one kind of came out of nowhere as we visited Dallas for the game. Dallas was without Marty Turco due to injury, and was looking at possibly getting some goaltending help. We had also been looking at Mietten for a while. We like the edge that Scottie plays on, but he wasn't having a good go of things when it came to offensive production. While Marty had a great run with us last year, something seemed to be off with his game this year. We needed to get a goalie back in this deal, and Smitty should be a great fit. He hasn't quite gotten a full chance to show what he can do yet. But the scouts and I were impressed with what we saw. Smitty is still a young goalie, and should improve over time. We looked forward to seeing him in Orange and Black for many years to come.
