Default Madden '09 Season Stories

Figured this would be the best place for this.

EAGLES BRING FIRST CHAMPIONSHIP TO PHILADELPHIA IN 26 YEARS

Brian Westbrook may have ran for 103 yards and four touchdowns yesterday on his way to winning MVP, but it was the defense who stole the show. Cornerback Sheldon Brown picked two of the five total interceptions from Chargers quarterback Phillip Rivers in Philadelphia's 35-17 Super Bowl XLIII win.

Asante Samuel, Brian Dawkins, and Quinten Mikell also contributed with an interception off of Rivers. Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb only threw the ball twenty five times, connecting on seventeen of them. Most importantly, he did not throw an interception. McNabb led the league in picks in the regular season and playoffs combined.

In fact, the Chargers only offensive touchdown came with a mere twenty two seconds remaining in the game. Rivers connected with tight end Brandon Manumaleuna for a three yard score to cap off the game's scoring.

McNabb led the Eagles down the field on their first drive of the game, and hit rookie standout DeSean Jackson on a three yard pass of their own to start the scoring. Jackson finished the day with three catches for twenty three yards.

Brian Westbrook's final stat line was impressive enough to give the Villanova standout running back the Most Valuable Player award.

"It wouldn't have been possible if it weren't for that defense," Westbrook said following the game. "Sheldon, Asante, Dawk, they all played a hell of a game, Q had a pick and delivered huge hits all day. Parker got to (Rivers) over and over again and threw him off from the start. I think the biggest complement to your defense is to cap off their turnovers with points, and that's what we did today."

In an unusual, yet effective gameplan, coach Andy Reid ran the ball with Westbrook alone then he called passes with McNabb.

"Donovan had a great year, but the amount of interceptions he threw overshadow that," Reid admitted.

A year that started off with a lot of drama has finished in a story book kind of way. Westbrook made the score 14-0 on a run to the right in the second quarter. San Diego followed with a strong drive that resulted in three points on a twenty six yard Nate Kaeding field goal. The half ended that way.

Westbrook added two more scores from inside the five to put the Eagles up 28-3. The game was all but over when running back Correll Buckhalter fumbled the ball just short of midfield with 3:20 remaining. Charger end Luis Castillo picked up the ball and put it in the endzone. Westbrook responded with another one yard run to cap off his day.

It will be interesting to see how the Eagles pursuit this offseason. Was Super Bowl XLIII his final game in midnight green?

"Like I've said all year," McNabb explained, "I am prepared to move on. I have came to that realization, but I am happy for the guys in the locker room, and the city of Philadelphia. I'm glad I could help, along with all the other guys and the coaching staff, bring a championship to this city. It deserves it."
