Rex's Winners and Losers of Draft Weekend Winners
1)Cleveland Browns - Brady Quinn AND Joe Thomas? That's two first round picks in one year, so that 2008 1st rounder is meaningless unless they have another terrible year. Their passing game is solid as long as both Kellen Winslow Jr. and Braylon Edwards both stay healthy, yet questions remain about the running game.
2)Carolina Panthers - The additions of Jon Beason and Charles Johnson improve their defense tremendously. However, their best move was nabbing Dwayne Jarrett late in the second round, then cutting Keyshawn Johnson. They also picked, what was my favorite center in the draft, Ryan Kalil to help Jake Delhomme and David Carr.
3)Buffalo Bills - This team looked like a joke prior to the draft. They traded their best linebacker to the Eagles, and lost their best defensive back to the Redskins. Did I forget to mention they traded Willis McGahee to Baltimore? Well they made a huge impact by selecting Marshawn Lynch out of Cal, who I believe will be better then McGahee. Trent Edwards might get a shot at starting next year, if JP Losman struggles. Oh yeah, and they somehow landed Paul Posluszny in the 2nd round. Those off-season subtractions don't look so bad after all.
4)Arizona Cardinals - They only had five picks, however, each pick will get a chance to show their stuff next year. Levi Brown was the best tackle available next to Joe Thomas, and he will provide a lot of protection for Matt Leinart. Alan Branch was great at Michgian, and will be a key component in their pass rush and run stopping, as is Buster Davis from Florida State. All three at some point were expected to be taken in the first round.
5)New England Patriots - If they didn't do enough this year in free agency, the Patriots picked up Randy Moss. Not only does Moss and Donte Stallworth look dangerous on the flanks, but their secondary got scarier with the adition of hard-hitting Bradon Meriweather out of Miami.
Notables: St. Louis Rams (Adam Carriker, Brian Leonard), New York Giants (Aaron Ross, Steve Smith), Oakland Raiders (JaMarcus Russell, Quintin Moses)
Losers
1)Washington Redskins - They need more help on the defensive line before the secondary. None of their picks make sense to me.
2)Seattle Seahawks - With no first round pick(was Deion Branch really worth it?), they decided to booster their defense. Will it work? Who knows.
3)Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Besides for Gaines Adams, who will be fun to watch, I don't think they improved much at all. They had chances for some very talented players, and they passed. Maybe their picks will play beyond expectation.
4)San Diego Chargers - I like the pick of Eric Weddle from Utah, but they need more help in the secondary.
5)Green Bay Packers - You just never know with this team anymore. I'm clueless.
Notables: New York Jets (Darelle Revis, David Harris), Philadelphia Eagles (Kevin Colb, Tony Hunt), Houston Texans (Amboi Okoye)
