| Hatcher meets with Holmgren http://www.delawareonline.com/apps/p...806280336/1024
Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren could free up another $3.5 million if defenseman Derian Hatcher agrees to retire or begin the season on the club's long-term injury list. Holmgren and Hatcher are scheduled to meet today to determine Hatcher's future with the Flyers.
The NHL free-agent market opens at noon Tuesday.
"Once we sign [Jones, Eminger and Cote], we will see where we are at and come up with our game plan [for free agency]," Holmgren said. | | | | Member

| While I would be sad to see a great player hang up the skates this needs to happen in the worst way. We are up against the cap and if he doesn't retire no way are we a player in free agency without a trade. | | | | Thoresen dropper NHL-spil

| I like Hatch, love his style and ferocity. But he's done. Hell, he can't even walk without a limp. RETIRE for the benefit of the team big guy.
Hopefully Homer tells him he's seen his best days, and it's time to hang 'em up. If he refuses, I'd tell him to enjoy the new orange and purple jersey. Goat'd.

| Awwww, poor Hatcher. He DOES need to retire, but its ashame it needs to be done this way. But hey, injuries only prove that he had his heart in the game and was a true player. If he puts the team before himself in this situation, Philly fans will be forever grateful to him.

| Hatch has always been a warrior, but every warrior knows when the fight can't be won. He has a ring, the respect and admiration of his teammates and this city, now only one thing remains...to step down and not tarnish a stellar career with memories of someone past their prime who refused to acknowledge the obvious.

The elements are pointing towards LTIR (Rathje Pt. 2) or retirement (which would free up the salary to sign somebody big). I believe buying him out would still keep part of his salary on the active roster while him retiring or being placed on LTIR would not. So basically Holmgren is telling him to retire or be forced to retire on the LTIR because nobody is going to take a risk when his contract expires next year when he is 37 and suffering from major knee problems. Unless he signs for dirt cheap in Dallas, I see him playing little to none. | | | | Local Celebrity
