Default Flyers close to signing Jones, Thoresen, and Cote

By Bill Meltzer
http://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog.php?post_id=15907

As most of you have seen by now, the Jeff Carter signing is official per the Flyers (no dollar figure/years given as of yet) and TSN (reporting three years, $15 million).

***
Paul Holmgren is back in Philadelphia for what figures to be a busy weekend before the July 1 start of free agency. Some quick updates on the Flyers' impending free agents:

* The Flyers and Jeff Carter remain close to completing an agreement on a three-year contract. The worth of the deal is generally reported at $15 million ($5 million cap hit per season), but there are also reports of a somewhat lower figure.

* Riley Cote's three-year deal is all but wrapped up. The contract worth will be between $1.7 million ($565,000 cap hit) per season and $2.4 million ($800,000 on the cap), depending on the source.

*The Camden Courier Post reports that Randy Jones is close to a three-year deal worth around $4 million ($1.33 million per season on the cap).

* Patrick Thoresen will be a restricted free agent after receiving a qualifying offer from the team. The only impeding free agents who did not receive qualifiers are defenseman Lars Jonsson (signed to play in Sweden) minor league goaltenders Martin Houle, Scott Munroe, and Rejean Beauchemin.

Someone do the math and see what happens when these deals go down, and (hopefully) Thor accepts that qualifying offer.

I want to see what we have left to use on a big name dman.

How does this work? Can someone please explain to me why $1.7 mil a year would only be a $565,000 cap hit?

Bill says that without these three signing we would have about 4 million dollars of cap space so I would estimate if those numbers are accurate we're probably going to have about 1 million in wiggle room unless Hatcher retires which the numbers would go up and we'd probably have enough to sign a good defenseman. Hatcher is really the key in this whole scenario for us.

Latest from Bill:

I am trying to find out when the Flyers will announce the re-signings of impeding restricted free agents Randy Jones and Riley Cote.

Yesterday I had heard the signings would be completed and officially announced today -- one day ahead of the start of free agency. However, as of this writing, there's no confirmation of an impeding announcement.

In any case, both players will be re-signed by the Flyers.
