Default Chuck Kobasew's New Contract May Affect Umberger and Carter

Kobasew just signed a new deal that will get him 2 million next year, and 2.5 the following two years.

Like Umberger, Kobasew is 26 years old. Kobasew had 22 goals and 39 points in 73 games. Umberger played in 74 games, and had 13 goals and 50 points. Both are similar players, and Kobasew made 1.5 this year as Umbeger made 1.25. You'd expect Umberger wouldn't get more then 3 million, right?

Carter had 53 points this past year with 29 goals. He is three years younger, so that could come into affect. Who knows.

Thoughts?

I would expect Umberger to get Kobasew's deal. Although I believe Umberger has higher all-around potential because Kobasew doesn't have the defensive coachability that Umby has.
I'm not sure how that deal would affect Carter though. Carter's at least a couple steps above those guys when he plays the game at the level he's been at since the trade deadline. His defensive game is still coming around but his only fault on the offensive side of things is not distributing the puck enough and taking too many bad angle, low percentage shots from the outside. As he develops his game and adds muscle to his frame, I think you'll be seeing him drive to the net more because he's very good at protecting the puck when it's on his stick.
If Carter signs for $3.5-4.5M per year, I'd consider it a good deal, because if he hits the RFA market, someone's going to "Vanek" him and we end up either a) letting him go for picks or b) we end up paying him way more than he's worth at this point.

Untrue... If they make it to RFA status, some team with alot of cap room and the desire to piss someone off can offer them an ungodly amount of money like EDM did with Thomas Vanek and Dustin Penner. Is Dustin Penner worth $4.25M a year for his 23G, 24A, 47P performance? Is Vanek worth $10M a year for his 64 points?
With the compensation for losing an RFA so disproportionate, there's alot of GM's out there willing to shed a few draft picks to get a young player entering their prime years.
Before the lockout it was kind of an unwritten rule that other GM's don't try to poach RFA's from other teams, but after the lockout it's been more of a common practice.

The real question is based on those dollars and the money already tied up with long term contracts can we afford to keep them both with the obvious need at the blue line.

My concern is to pick up another D man. Parent should be able to play a full season. However, that leaves Smith, Modry, and Jones as possible departures. I think both Smith and Modry walk with Jones being resigned. We are still low on the blueline and we have a little bit extra up front.

Do we go after a player like Liles from the Avs or throw big money at Campbell?

No to Liles or Campbell.

Liles is is a more offensive oriented Jones.

Hainsey is the only defender I'd throw money at.
