Another preseason game, another game we are closer to starting the 2003-04 campaign. Tonight's matchup against the Devils was the "most physical" of any preseason game that the Flyers have played this early season.
As for the game, the scoring opened in the first period with a Michal Handzus goal. Jim Vandermeer and Patrick sharp both scored goals in the second period to give the orange and black a 3-0 lead over the Devs. The Devils were down but not out as Adrian Foster, Patrik Elias, and Grant Marshall racked up three unanswered goals on Jeff Hackett. Shortly after that goal, Scott Stevens and Donald Brashear dropped the gloves and engaged in physical activity that pleased the home crowd, we can just say that Brashear won the battle and recieved instigation and misconduct penalties for his actions.
The game went into an overtime that was very physical and quickly - paced. At 2:29 of overtime, Jeremy Ronieck scored the game's winning goal and the Philadelphia Flyers improve to 3-1 in the preseason.
My thoughts on the game:
- Chris Therien needs to work on puck-control, he coughed up the puck numerous times this evening.
- Jeff Hackett looks to be reliable, then again it IS only the preseason
- Patrick Sharp and Jim Vandermeer both had a goal in the contest and both seemed to be comfortable on the ice in this game.
- I'm sad to see the Phillies out of the playoffs
