HIVE article Flyers beat Capitals, improve to 2-0 in the preseason

Source: PhiladelphiaFlyers.com

London, Ontario - The Philadelphia Flyers improved to 2-0 in the preseason with their second victory in as many nights, defeating the Washington Capitals at the Labatt Centre, 4-2.

Dennis Seidenberg and Justin Williams led the way for Philadelphia, each scoring a goal and an assist. As was the case in the Flyers victory on Friday night against New Jersey, goaltenders Robert Esche and Jeff Hackett split the playing time between the pipes. Hackett started the game, while Esche relieved him midway through the second.

Esche surrendered both Washington goals.

Seidenberg opened the scoring at 19:46 of the first period, blasting home a shot on the power play. Rookie defenseman Joni Pitkanen picked up his second assist of the preseason on the play.

The Flyers increased their lead to 2-0 in the second period when Michal Handzus scored at 16:35. Washington cut that lead to 2-1 when Michael Nylander scored at the 18:44 mark.

In the third period, Radovan Somik picked up his first goal of the preseason on the power play at 8:32, as Seidenberg and Sami Kapanen assisted. After a Justin Williams goal made it 4-1 in favor of the Flyers, a goal by Washington?s Brian Sotherby at 19:59 capped the scoring.

Jaromir Jagr registered two assists for the Capitals.

Philadelphia outshot Washington for the game, 28-23.

The Flyers? next game will once again be at a neutral site, as they face New Jersey at the Sovereign Bank Arena in Trenton, New Jersey. All three of Philadelphia?s preseason games next week are against the Devils, as the two teams will play at the Wachovia Center on Friday night and the Continental Airlines Arena next Saturday night.
