My Thoughts on the Defensive Prospects... One of the most publicized stories circulating through camp (other than the Hackett-Esche battle) is the fight between our four most promising young defensemen for spots on the big club. Sophomores Dennis Seidenberg (who ousted Bruno St. Jacques out of his spot) and Jim Vandermeer (who replaced Seidenberg after he "hit the wall") will be battling along with rookie first rounders Jeff Woywitka and Joni Pitkanen to stake a claim on the Flyers' starting six.
From all indications, head coach Hitchcock has not ruled out the possibility of taking two prospects into the top six. However, Hitchcock has been adamant in saying that wherever the four land, they will be playing, and not sitting in the press box. That would mean that one of our current veterans (most likely Chris Therien or Marcus Ragnarsson, or possibly even a "platoon" system) will take the role of 7th defenseman.
If they are committed to taking two young dmen, then my feeling is that they will take one of Vandermeer or Woywitka, and one of Seidenberg or Pitkanen. Characteristically, as each pair have similar qualities. Vandermeer and Woywitka are defensive minded skaters who can move the puck, but are probably not going to score as many goals (granted, Woywitka may grow into a scoring role, but is more defensive minded at this point). Seidenberg and Pitkanen, however, are two way defensemen who will be looked upon to contribute to the scoring.
If this is how things pan out, I would expect to see Vandermeer and Pitkanen start with the Flyers. However, there is no doubt in my mind that at some point in the season, all four players will see action with the big club. |
