History

2004-05: Jonathan Matsumoto enjoyed a superb rookie campaign at Bowling Green that earned him an honorable mention to the CCHA All-Rookie Team. The Orleans, Ontario native led the Falcons in scoring with 32 points (18 goals, 14 assists) playing in all 36 games. In addition, Matsumoto led Bowling Green in power play goals (10), game-winning goals (5), and shooting percentage (.189). He was twice named CCHA Rookie of the Week. At the team’s season-ending awards ceremony, Matsumoto was named the recipient of Bowling Green’s Sam Cooper Trophy, which recognizes the team’s top scorer.

2005-06: Matsumoto, along with Alex Foster (TOR), made up one of the nation’s most potent offensive duos this season. Matsumoto finished second on the Falcons team in scoring with 48 points (20 goals, 28 assists) in 36 games. The Orleans, ON native’s 20 goals and 12 power play goals both led the team. One of Matsumoto’s most memorable games came back on October 15, when he posted his first career hat-trick in BGSU’s 6-9 loss to Boston College.

2006-07: He was one of the few bright spots on an otherwise dismal Falcons squad last year, registering a team-leading 38 points (11 goals, 22 assists) in 33 contests. In 16 games with the Phantoms at the end of the 2006-07 campaign, Matsumoto tallied two goals and two assists; he has also registered two minor penalties and a -3 rating.

Matsumoto inked a professional contract with the Flyers after the completion of his junior season.

Talent Analysis

Matsumoto is a brilliant playmaking center who brings an infectious enthusiasm to his game. He possesses superb passing skills and knows how to find his linemates. He does good job of controlling and protecting the puck as well. Matsumoto is a strong skater who moves quite well through traffic. He is a smart player with excellent hockey sense. His play around the net is also very good. He will drive to the net hard and often. He has a quick, accurate shot. One area where Matsumoto will need to improve is his foot speed. He doesn’t quite have that burst of speed that is associated with many great skaters.
