Flyers goaltender Robert Esche had successful surgery today on his adductor muscle (groin) and will be out of action for two-to-four weeks.

The Flyers have recalled goaltender Martin Houle from the AHL Philadelphia Phantoms to backup Antero Niittymaki.

Already without the services of rookie Jeff Carter (fractured tibia - out six weeks), forward Todd Fedoruk (facial injuries), and defenceman Denis Gauthier (shoulder injury - out 10 weeks), the Flyers sit in last place in the Atlantic Division and last in the Eastern Conference.

Esche, 28, has registered a 2-4-0 record, 5.64 GAA and .820 save percentage in seven games for the Flyers this season.

Houle, 21, has registered a 4-4-0 record, 3.91 GAA and .885 save percentage in nine games for the Phantoms this season. He was named the Phantoms' 2005-06 Rookie of the Year after compiling an 18-18-1 record, 2.54 GAA, .914 save percentage and two shutouts in 40 games for the Phantoms.

probably won't play, unless, maybe 1 game after a back-to-back, I'm curious to see how he does if they put em in.

my question is, why didn't we deal Esche to the Coyotes... I'm sure we could have gotten something for him.. besides, we have a trade history with them... Holmgren needs to get on the ball!

YAHOOOOOOOO! Best news I've heard in a long time. Develop Nitty more and dump his sorry 50-mile rebound ass...

maybe his groin is the reason he's been such a sieve this season

I really like Houle, hopefully he'll get some time and turn some heads.

It would be nice to see Houle in action and test our young goalies in the league. If he's good enough to stay, that would give us another reason to part with Esche.

Houle looked good in the warmup last night. The Flyers couldn't get one in, his glove looked really solid and his rebound control was nice too, everything was going to the corners. Towards the end of practice 4 or 5 flyers just kept on trying to get the one puck in and stormed the net, looks promising

good to hear, hopefully we can dump some salary and ship Esche out. It would be nice to have two young goalies like that developing together at the highest level.

I like the Nitty-Houle tandem much more than the Nitty-Esche... I think Eschey showed his true colors earlier this year... don't know if he's still not poisoned to some degree
